Product Description Apartment dwellers, go for the ball!
With its convenient, collapsible handle for closet storage, the Dyson DC24 Ball Upright is the lightest and most compact vacuum in Dyson's line-up. This vacuum model is based upon the successful Ball design which allows the head and base off the vacuum to pivot and turn with a twist of the wrist. The design allows the vacuum to easily maneuver around furniture and tight spaces with ease. As such, it is excellent for cleaning all floors with the grace and aplomb of a ballet dancer. It has a lifetime HEPA filter. There are no bags to replace. An extending wand cleans drapes, upholstery, and more.
When and where storage space is prime and closets are already crammed, this 12-pound Dyson offers a collapsible handle. It's an upright that fits into really small spaces.

Small size, average performance August 30, 2010 Andrzej Wierzbicki This is one of the smallest and also one of cheapest offerings in the Dyson line of uprights. It features the Dyson ball (not to be confused with a Dyson sphere), which along with its small size and weight makes it incredibly maneuverable. Suction is average at best, especially compared to the larger models. Good thing the cyclone techonology prevents loss of suction, because you will need every bit of it.
On hard flooring you're better off with a shop vac as this will often just push dirt around rather than pick it up. On carpet performance is adequate but lack of edge cleaning is frustrating and the rotating brushes also have a tendency to tangle easily with hair. The cord is too short, often requiring switching outlets in larger rooms. It would probably be a better idea just to have a short on-vac cord and let the owner supply their own extension cord (like most power tools) given how useless it is.
The two filters used in the vac are permanent and washable. While this may seem to be a good feature by the designers, the filter in the ball is hard to access, takes over a day to air dry, and after a few washings acquires a nice hot, cooked mildewy odor which the vac then spreads across the house. There's a cleaning wand that pops out of the handle in a convoluted and complex fashion that takes more time than it should. When you've deployed the cleaning wand you'll find that it's short and pathetically knocks the vac over and lifts it when you try to clean anything higher than a coffee table. There are two attachments, an edge cleaning tool and some type of brush. In my experience only the edge cleaning tool has the adequate suction to be of any use.
Construction quality is cheap and plasticky. The power and brush buttons often require several good stabs to actually do anything. It's probably a better idea leave the power button to "on" and just unplug it to save time.
Good thing that it comes with a 5 year warranty--which I haven't had to use, yet.
In short:
Pros: small, light, cheapest of the Dyson line of uprights, good warranty
Cons: average suction which is unacceptable on hard floors, short extension cord, short hose on cleaning wand, still expensive, washable filters are a pain to wash and start to smell, cleaning wand is cumbersome and irritating to use
Advice: Don't buy this overpriced underperforming vacuum.
Great strength vs. ease-of-use balance August 28, 2010 Morbeach We live in a not so big house on 3 stories where closet space is at a premium and a vacuum has lots of obstacles to maneuver around. We've also got three kids and a cat. For us this Dyson has been a great balance of cleaning power and usability. We looked at the bigger, cheaper standups from Hoover and Kenmore (and even Dyson) but opted against lugging and storing these bigger and heavier machines. What we love... it's very light, compact and easy to store. It's very nimble. The whole ball idea means it really does turn on a dime, super useful we have relatively limited wide open spaces and plenty of furniture to move with a bigger vacuum. Suction is way stronger than our previous vac (a 10 year old Hoover) and does a good job on all the cat hair. Guessing the bigger standups might be a little stronger in this area but tradeoff just not worth it for us. I didn't really care much about the bag vs. bagless thing but the bagless dust collector on this Dyson is pretty handy. Pops off easily and dumps it's cargo in your trash can without much fuss. The overhead/hose assembly seems fine (just one accessory head) though so far we don't use it much. All in all we're very happy, and hoping for a good durability story as well over the years, even though it does have a lifetime warranty.
Some flaws August 17, 2010 Daniel Granados (los angeles, CA) This vacuum looks very slick and is fairly easy to maneuver. Its smaller size makes it easier to store. The bagless aspect is also convenient. However, it does have a couple of problems. the entire vacuum is made of plastic. There have been a few times where I've been worried it would break or crack. The button to control the main carpet brush often sticks and does not work properly. An additional fault is the overall weak suction of the unit. It generally gets the job done, but may take a few passes and cannot pick up midsized items such as cat food. I would not recommend paying full price as in typical Dyson fashion this machine costs about twice what it should.
Cheap plastic August 16, 2010 Grooves on the Move (Farmington, NM) Important parts on this vacuum are made of cheap plastic. The end cap that holds the beater bar in place is so soft that if you use the vacuum for more than 10 minutes, it gets hot and melts. Suction is poor and you have to continually go over the same area to get all the crumbs and dirt. I am not impressed with this vacuum at all. For the price it should function flawlessly and be made of quality materials. It fails to live up to the price tag.
Great vacuum for the right situation with some minor flaws August 16, 2010 The Greco A few weeks ago, I would have sworn that I would never own a Dyson, mostly because of the cost. However, as I started analyzing exactly what my needs were, I realized that the DC24 fits my needs the best. I was basically looking for a stick vacuum, but with more power and better filtration. I think Dyson pulled way ahead of the competition when they developed the ball technology and for me they perfected it with the small DC24.
This vacuum is almost perfect for our house which is approximately 1800 square feet with hard wood floors, some rugs and some places that are a bit tight for a full size vacuum. It has enough suction to EASILY clean the dog hair off of the rugs but not so much that it grabs and moves the small rugs (which can be aggravating with a larger vac). Based on some of the reviews here, I thought that I would have a problem with the smaller rugs, but I don't.
The exhaust exits through the vents on the ball and I was a little concerned that the exhaust might blow the dog hair around on the hardwood floor making it difficult to catch, but fortunately, that is NOT a problem.
Now for the reasons that I didn't give it five stars:
1. The handle really should lock in place when it is down in the stowed position. I do not like the idea of using the dust bin handle to carry the entire vacuum even though it was apparently designed for that.
2. A couple of parts really are extremely fragile looking. They may hold up just fine ... maybe they are designed to bend rather than break.
I am not going to complain about the short hose because it is first and foremost, a compact vacuum cleaner. An extension hose can be bought for around 20 dollars.
If a full size vacuum cleaner is just too big, this is a great little one that gets the job done quickly and efficiently and really doesn't have any competitors as near as I can tell.
UPDATE AFTER A MONTH - MY wife and I LOVE this little guy. I am going to have to start getting to it quicker than her so I can use it. I am now a BIG Dyson fan.
Here is the Dyson difference in a nutshell. The multiple cyclones remove ALMOST EVERY LAST BIT of debris from the air. The filter in the top of the dirt bin is only there to catch the few dust particles that somehow escape the cyclones.
